Jewish Women Cartoonists Lecture Series and Workshops at UMass Amherst

Four outstanding Jewish women graphic novelists are coming to the University of Massachusetts to present talks on their work and to offer four days of workshops on writing and drawing comics and graphic novels. These events are free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible.

The talks (all at 7 PM):

June 15th: Professor N. C. Christopher Couch talks on The Jewish Tradition in American Comic Art, Yiddish Book Center, on the campus of Hampshire College.

June 16th: Leela Corman discusses her work, including her feminist graphic novel about the Yiddish world of the Lower East Side in the 1910s, Unterzakhn, at the UMass Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies.

June 17th: Sarah Glidden discusses How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less, her widely-praised graphic novel on her Birthright trip to Israel and her work as a comics journalist in Syria, Iraq, et al., Modern Myths, 34 Bridge St # 4, in Northampton, across from the Post Office.

June 18th: Panel Discussion, Jewish Women and the Graphic Novel, artists and scholars discussion moderated by Israeli cartoonist Keren Katz, Cape Cod Lounge, UMass.

June 19th: Liana Finck discusses her graphic novel A Bintel Brief, just reviewed in the New York Times and exhibited at the Yiddish Book Center and signs books at Amherst Books, 8 Main St, in downtown Amherst.

The four artists will offer four days of workshops on writing and drawing comics and graphic novels open to high school, college and graduate students and recent graduates. The workshops will be from 10 AM to 2 PM, June 16th to June 19th, and all will be held at the Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Art supplies will be provided, and no previous experience in comics is required. Any student who is interested in this artistic medium is welcome, and students may attend any or all of the workshops.
